ASHRAE LI Past Presidents Interview: Frank Morgigno

The Long Island Sounder: Steven Gerazounis – Historian

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy golf, fishing, music (guitar) and spending time with my family.

Where have you worked in the past?

I’ve owned my own company for the last 28 years, before that I worked for a manufacturer (Mestek, Inc.) and prior to that, a fuel oil company and an HVAC contractor.

When and why did you decide to pursue a career in HVAC&R?

I was the Chief Engineer of a Naval Research Ship in the U.S. Navy. I received extensive training in propulsion engineering curriculum for shipboard steam plants and auxiliary systems. I also received a specialization in HVAC/R systems. It was a natural and easy transition to the non-military application of those technologies in civilian life.

What was the year you held the president position in ASHRAE LI?

I became President in 1999-2000.

When/Why did you decide to join the board?

I was invited to join the BOG by Mike O’Rourke in (I believe) 1995. I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to serve the industry and broaden my horizons by meeting new and interesting people in our field.

What do you feel was the greatest contribution you made in ASHRAE?

Since my tenure was only a year, the two significant things that stand out was that I, along with Alan Goerke, established a long-standing L.I. Chapter Golf Outing held each year at Cherry Valley Golf Club. My partner at the time, Bob Hutter, was a member of Cherry Valley. He sponsored us for the inaugural event. Since then, it’s been a recurring source of revenue for the Chapter each and every year. The other main accomplishment was hosting the CRC. As a member of the Region, I chaired the TEGA Committee and helped to establish an energy policy for the Town of Babylon based on ASHRAE standards.

How has ASHRAE played a significant role in your career?

ASHRAE allowed me to establish relationships that have served me personally and professionally. The business relationships I was able to create were a catalyst for starting and company of my own. These relationships provided me with the confidence and ability to develop a successful company that continues to serve the community for almost three decades.

What recommendation would you make towards students showing interest in HVAC&R?

There’s never been a better time than RIGHT NOW to pursue a career in HVAC&R. We live in a time of significant change. The demand for energy is greater than any other time in our history. There are growing opportunities for entrepreneurial thinking as we balance the call for environmental consciousness with the need for energy independence. ASHRAE is a great way to become involved in the who, why and how to find your direction for serving a thriving and evolving industry.
